Short answer: Across the collision industry, cosmetic repairs typically take a few days, a multi-panel paint job takes 3–5 days, moderate collision damage takes one to two weeks, and structural repairs involving frame work and sensor calibration can take several weeks. The biggest variables usually aren't the repair itself — they're insurance approval and parts availability. That's why an honest shop gives you a range at the estimate and a firm date once the car has been taken apart and inspected.
The Four Steps of an Insurance Repair at J & J Auto Body
1. You report the accident to your insurer
Call your insurance company and get a claim number. You don't need a repair estimate first — though we're happy to give you a free one if it helps you decide whether a claim is worth filing.
2. Bring us your claim number
Contact J & J with your claim number and we take it from there. We schedule your vehicle inspection and open a direct line of communication with your insurer.
3. We handle the adjuster
We prepare a full repair estimate, submit it to your adjuster, and advocate for proper OEM parts and fair repair coverage. If hidden damage turns up once panels come off — a bent reinforcement bar behind a "simple" bumper hit is common in Highway 101 rear-end collisions — we document it and submit a supplement.
4. Pick up your repaired vehicle
Once repairs are approved and complete, you pay only your deductible. Your insurer settles the rest directly with us.
What Actually Sets the Timeline
- Approval time. Some insurers approve an estimate quickly; others send their own adjuster to inspect first. This is outside any shop's control.
- Parts availability. Common panels for common vehicles often arrive in a few days. Factory parts for certified repairs can take longer — and as a shop certified by Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, RAM, Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge, we use them where the manufacturer requires, because they protect your warranty and resale value. Back-ordered and EV-specific parts can take weeks, and no shop can speed that up.
- Hidden damage. Anything found after tear-down needs a supplement and a second approval.
- Paint cure time. A quality refinish can't be rushed. We break down why a great paint job takes 3–5 days hour by hour.
- Sensor calibration. Modern vehicles carry driver-assist systems — automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring. We perform ADAS calibration in-house before your car is released, so those systems work the way the manufacturer intended.
Typical Timelines by Damage Type
These are typical industry ranges, not quotes. Your estimate gives you a range for your car, and we confirm a firm date after tear-down.
| Damage Scenario | Typical Time in Shop |
|---|---|
| Single-panel scratch or scuff refinish | A few days |
| Multi-panel paint or small fender bender | 3–5 days |
| Moderate collision, several panels plus calibration | 1–2 weeks |
| Structural or frame repair | Several weeks |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't a body shop give a firm completion date up front?
Hidden damage is often discovered once panels come off. A date quoted before tear-down is a guess; an honest shop gives you a range at the estimate and a firm date after inspection.
Does going through insurance make the repair slower?
It adds time at the approval and supplement stages. We communicate directly with your adjuster so those steps don't stall on your end.
Do I have to use the shop my insurer recommends?
No. In California, you have the right to choose your own repair shop. We work with all insurance companies — State Farm, AAA, GEICO, Allstate, Farmers and more.
Is the repair covered by a warranty?
Yes. Paint work is backed by a lifetime warranty on PPG refinished paint.
